Three paths to net zero-Belgium
As Europe sharpens its focus on energy security and industrial resilience, Belgium is charting its own course toward climate neutrality by 2050. The newly formed PATHS2050 Coalition—featuring VITO (EnergyVille), ArcelorMittal, BASF, Elia, Fluxys, and Luminus—has unveiled three detailed and cost-efficient roadmaps to a net-zero future. Building on the original PATHS2050 platform launched in 2022, the updated study addresses recent geopolitical and market shifts, offering policymakers and industry a robust, data-driven compass.
Each scenario maintains Belgium’s industrial output while varying the roles of wind energy, sustainable molecules, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), and carbon capture technologies. Rather than forecasts, the roadmaps offer structured, adaptable pathways, helping to align national ambitions with the EU’s broader Clean Industrial Deal. Belgium’s PATHS2050 study reinforces a growing trend: coordinated, cross-sector planning is essential if Europe is to meet its climate goals without compromising economic strength.
