Fujitsu, Toyota Motor Europe, Virya Energy and WaterstofNet demonstrate hydrogen’s potential for low-emission logistics in Belgium

Mid October, Fujitsu announced the successful completion of a hydrogen logistics simulation project in collaboration with Toyota Motor Europe, Virya Energy and WaterstofNet. Using Fujitsu’s advanced digital twin technology, the partners evaluated the operational performance of hydrogen fuel cell trucks across the Flemish road network, comparing them with battery-electric and diesel alternatives under realistic transport conditions. The results demonstrated that hydrogen-powered trucks can achieve delivery and refuelling times comparable to diesel vehicles while producing zero tailpipe CO₂, NOx and particulate emissions during operation. The study particularly highlighted hydrogen’s potential for time-sensitive and intensive logistics applications, where driving range, rapid refuelling and vehicle availability are crucial. By identifying suitable transport routes and assessing hydrogen refuelling infrastructure needs, the project provides valuable insights for fleet operators, infrastructure developers and policymakers. The findings, presented during EU Hydrogen Week 2026 in Brussels, underline the importance of hydrogen as a complementary solution to battery-electric mobility in decarbonising heavy-duty transport and accelerating the development of a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem in Belgium and beyond.
