Messer and FRAPPA propose a liquid nitrogen based cooling system for zero emission refrigerated road transport, compatible with H2 powered trucks

Messer and FRAPPA, the French leader in sustainable refrigerated transport, have developed an alternative cooling system for refrigerated road transport. Specifically designed for urban deliveries with frequent door openings, the ‘EcoLIN’ solution uses liquid nitrogen to maintain optimal temperatures for both chilled and frozen products throughout transportation.

This technology could be of particular interest for hydrogen-powered refrigerated lorries. As these do not have a diesel engine to power a refrigeration unit, cooling is usually provided electrically. This requires additional energy from the fuel cell and/or the traction battery, which also leads to higher hydrogen consumption.

With EcoLIN, this extra electrical energy is not required, as cooling is provided by liquid nitrogen.

On 22 and 23 September 2026, this technology will be showcased by Messer at the Empack trade fair at Flanders Expo in Ghent. Besides the EcoLIN, Messer will also focus on hydrogen transport in general.
