Dutch hydrogen players unite as ‘Alquion’
Battolyser Systems and VDL Hydrogen Systems have formally merged to create Alquion, a new cleantech company focused on advancing hydrogen production through next-generation electrolyser technology. By combining their expertise and teams, the two Dutch pioneers aim to scale the commercialisation of the Flexolyser - a fully flexible, high-capacity alkaline electrolyser designed to better integrate intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar into the energy system. The ‘Flexolyser’ addresses a key limitation of conventional electrolysers by allowing rapid start-up and shutdown without performance loss, enabling efficient conversion of surplus renewable electricity into hydrogen when supply is high, and flexible operation when it is low. This capability supports grid balancing, reduces congestion, and can lower green hydrogen production costs by up to 25%, improving competitiveness with fossil-based alternatives.
