Colruyt Group and VDL put first Belgian H2HAUL trucks on the road

Colruyt Group and VDL - both WIC members – have started testing two hydrogen fuel cell trucks in Belgium as part of the EU-funded H2HAUL project (2019–2026).  With support from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the project unites partners including OPmobility, VDL and WaterstofNet to deploy 16 zero-emission trucks across four sites in Europe.

The Belgian trucks come with several innovations: a fuel cell system developed by OPmobility and VDL and 40 kg of hydrogen storage spread over seven lightweight carbon-fibre tanks at 350 bar. The design fits neatly within the standard 16,5 m length for trucks with day cab and trailer. Since late May, one truck has been in daily operation; a second will soon follow in Colruyt Group’s logistics planning.

Testing in real-world conditions will provide valuable insights into the further development of hydrogen drivetrains for heavy-duty transport.
