CMB.TECH launches world’s first ammonia-powered dry bulk carrier

Belgian shipping company CMB.TECH announced that Mineral Europa, the world’s first ammonia-powered dry bulk carrier, had successfully completed its sea trials and was preparing for its maiden voyage to Australia. This milestone demonstrates the potential of ammonia, a hydrogen-derived fuel, to decarbonize large ocean-going vessels and accelerate the transition towards hydrogen-based maritime energy solutions. Green ammonia, produced using renewable hydrogen and nitrogen from the air, offers a promising alternative to conventional marine fuels, enabling CO₂-free combustion while providing a scalable solution for long-distance shipping. Building on this achievement, CMB.TECH plans to introduce 21 ammonia-powered vessels by 2029, including 18 dry bulk carriers, one container ship and two chemical tankers, with most expected to be delivered within the next nine months. Alongside its fleet expansion, the company is investing in ammonia storage infrastructure and bunkering solutions to support the safe and efficient supply of alternative maritime fuels.
