Cleanergy Solutions Namibia launches Africa’s first integrated green hydrogen plant

Namibia has officially inaugurated its first integrated green hydrogen plant in Walvis Bay. The facility, opened by Prime Minister Dr. Elijah Ngurare and Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH among others, uses a standalone solar-powered electrolyser to produce green hydrogen onsite and supports a refuelling station for vehicles, industrial use, and off-grid power generation. An accompanying Hydrogen Academy will train Namibians in hydrogen technologies, while initial applications already include dual-fuel trucks, tractors, and hydrogen-powered gensets.

This initiative is framed as a turning point in Namibia’s Vision 2030, combining local ambition with European-financed collaboration (including support from the EU and German agencies) to jump-start a green industrial transition. Plans are already ahead to expand hydrogen use into rail and maritime sectors (e.g., converting a diesel locomotive, deploying a hydrogen harbour vessel), reinforcing Namibia’s emerging role as a green energy and logistics hub.
