Air Liquide’s Ammonia-cracker in Antwerp operational

Last year, we organized our December WIC meeting at the BASF site in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, with a visit to Air Liquide’s ammonia cracker.  Last week, Air Liquide reported the successful start-up of this world’s first industrial-scale pilot unit for ‘cracking’ ammonia (NH3) into hydrogen, operating at a capacity of 30 tons of ammonia per day. By turning ammonia - an easily transported hydrogen carrier - back into hydrogen at scale, the innovation addresses the long-standing hurdle of efficient hydrogen shipping and unlocks new low-carbon supply chains for both industry and mobility.
