Agfa inaugurates GIGA-SCALES: a cutting-edge green hydrogen membrane facility
On 29 September, during the European Hydrogen Week 2025, Agfa opened its new ZIRFON production facility in Mortsel, Belgium - a major step in scaling up green hydrogen membranes. Backed by an €11 million grant of the EU Innovation Fund, this modular site will power key industries like steel, chemicals, heavy transport, and renewable energy storage. ZIRFON alkaline electrolyser membranes (AEL) are already recognized for their efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness in alkaline water electrolysis - now they are ready to scale globally.
By expanding the production capacity, Agfa strengthens Europe’s drive towards net-zero, industrial decarbonization, and energy independence. Leaders including Prime Minister Bart De Wever and EU Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra underlined the importance of this investment for Europe’s competitiveness and sustainability.
