Hydrogen to Avoid Curtailment in Turbine farms
Hyacint
November 2025 – October 2027
The Hyacint project develops innovative scenarios to minimize production curtailment of offshore wind turbines. This occurs, for example, when electricity prices are negative or there are problems with grid stability. To make optimal use of surplus energy, electrolysis platforms are being designed to produce hydrogen at sea. This green hydrogen will have various applications, such as refueling stations for ships and power-to-power solutions.
The technical concepts are thoroughly analyzed from a financial perspective, after which the outlines of a demonstration off the Belgian coast are drawn up for the most promising technical-economic hydrogen concept. This includes setting up a consortium, a realistic budget, and a phased plan.
Long-term goal: In the long term, Hyacint aims to contribute to the maximum integration of renewable energy into the Belgian energy system, reduce dependence on the electricity grid, and accelerate the adoption of hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier.
Role of WaterstofNet
WaterstofNet is responsible for coordinating the project, developing the demonstration concept, and conducting technical and economic research into hydrogen at sea.
