IOK Waste Management provides an integrated waste management in the Kempen region (Flanders, Belgium), for a population of more than half a million inhabitants in 29 municipalities. For more than 25 years, the focus has been on waste prevention and sustainable materials management. This waste policy, with its thorough selective collection and great attention to communication, has borne fruit. The Kempen municipalities have the lowest residual waste figures and the highest recycling rate in Flanders. IOK Waste Management is a pioneer in selective collection; in 1990 separate collection of organic waste started, followed very quickly by paper and packaging waste. IOK Waste Management manages a mechanical-biological separation installation for residual waste. Their composting plant with pre-fermentation produces compost and green natural gas. The modal shift from road to water for the transport of waste is an example of IOK Waste Management's sustainable and innovative policy.
