Toyota highlights European hydrogen role through multi-pathway engagement

Toyota Motor Europe (TME) recently showcased its multi-pathway decarbonisation strategy, particularly highlighting hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, during a high-level visit to its R&D centre in Zaventem, Flanders, Belgium, where the Flemish Minister-President Matthias Diependaele and the Japanese Ambassador Takeshi Osuga, were welcomed to discuss innovation, competitiveness and the energy transition. The visit underscored Toyota’s significant European footprint, its collaboration with local and EU policymakers, and the integration of hydrogen fuel cell research within its broader carbon-neutral vision. Toyota’s commitment to hydrogen is part of a wider strategy that includes scaling fuel cell systems across mobility sectors such as passenger cars, commercial vehicles and heavy-duty transport, supported by partnerships and infrastructure initiatives that strengthen hydrogen ecosystems in Europe as demand grows.
The event also served as a forum to present the Waterstof Industrie Cluster (WIC), with the presentation delivered by WaterstofNet’s CEO, Bert De Colvenaer. The WIC’s presence underscored regional ambitions to strengthen hydrogen ecosystems, and the ‘coalition of the willing’ (stakeholders committed to accelerating hydrogen deployment in heavy-duty mobility) among others.
