The Netherlands presents plan for large hydrogen plant in sea
The government wants to produce green hydrogen on a large scale in the North Sea, north of the Wadden Islands, with electricity from windmills. Starting in 2031, hydrogen should come ashore via a pipeline.
Green hydrogen is an important pillar of European energy policy, but it is not yet produced on a large scale. The Dutch government wants to be at the forefront of development within Europe and sees a major role for the northern Netherlands, particularly Groningen, in this. After all, there is already a lot of gas infrastructure here, with pipelines that can also transport hydrogen, and there is also room in the North Sea for large wind farms.
A wind farm is already planned at the site where the new hydrogen plant is to be located, several dozen kilometers north of Ameland. An existing natural gas pipeline could possibly bring the hydrogen ashore.
