Study: Hydrogen emissions and their potential global warming impact
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) conducted research regarding the potential global warming impact caused by hydrogen emissions. Experts agree that a renewable hydrogen economy would significantly reduce the global warming impact compared to a fossil fuel economy. However, hydrogen losses to the atmosphere will impact the lifetime of other greenhouse gases, namely methane, ozone, and water vapour, indirectly contributing to the increase of the Earth’s temperature in the near-term. Prevention, reduction and monitoring of losses along the entire supply chain should therefore be a priority for the hydrogen industry. The report shows available data on the topic as well as measurement technologies to monitor hydrogen leakages.
