Standardised hydrogen containers clear key hurdle for Rhine Shipping
RH2INE has reached a major milestone for hydrogen-powered inland shipping after Lloyd’s Register granted Approval in Principle (AiP) for its open standard for interchangeable hydrogen containers. Developed with industry partners and certification experts, the standard covers 380-bar hydrogen containers in 20-foot and 40-foot formats, allowing them to function both as onboard fuel tanks and as certified hydrogen transport and storage units across road, rail and inland waterways. This multimodal approach could help overcome a key barrier to hydrogen adoption in shipping by creating interoperable infrastructure that can serve multiple vessels, locations and industrial users rather than requiring dedicated refuelling infrastructure for every application. The approval moves the concept closer to commercial deployment, with RH2INE now planning pilot projects, zero-emission shipping corridors and a gradual scale-up of vessels and containers alongside increased green hydrogen production and demand. Investors also plan to establish the Rh2ineTainer Company (RTC) to manage and lease the containers to inland shipping operators, potentially providing a scalable business model for hydrogen-based zero-emission shipping along the Rhine corridor.
