SSAB Hits IEA ‘Near-Zero’ Steel Benchmark with SSAB Zero™

The Swedish steelmaker SSAB has announced that its SSAB Zero™ steel now meets the International Energy Agency’s criteria for near-zero CO₂e emissions steel of between 50kg and 400kg CO2-equivalent per tonne of crude steel. The SSAB Zero™ steel is manufactured in IOWA using its HYBRIT® hydrogen-based technology. This achievement makes SSAB Zero the world’s first commercially available near-zero emissions steel under both IEA and First Movers Coalition thresholds. The steel will be used in GE Vernova’s onshore wind towers in the United States, reinforcing a decarbonized supply chain.
