PSA Antwerp achieves breakthrough with second-generation hydrogen straddle carrier

PSA Antwerp has successfully completed testing of its second-generation dual-fuel hydrogen straddle carrier, marking an important step forward in the decarbonisation of port operations. Developed at PSA’s Noordzee Terminal in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the upgraded vehicle operates on a mix of diesel and hydrogen and delivers a 63–70% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to a standard hybrid straddle carrier, while reducing diesel consumption by up to 78% compared to conventional diesel equipment.

The project was realised in collaboration with CMB.TECH, Kalmar, Volvo and Air Products, demonstrating how hydrogen can be integrated into heavy-duty port equipment without compromising operational performance, flexibility or productivity. The successful pilot strengthens Antwerp’s position as a leading hydrogen innovation hub and highlights the growing role of hydrogen technologies in reducing emissions from hard-to-abate logistics and industrial sectors.
