Pragmatic Germany simplifies hydrogen & RFNBO regulation
Mid-September, German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche presented a monitoring report on the energy transition. The report includes ten key measures that are friendly to business and competition. One of measures proposed by the Ministry is explicitly about hydrogen; “pragmatically promote a technology-open hydrogen ramp-up and reduce overly complex requirements”. The report suggests that low-carbon hydrogen (for example from processes with carbon capture) should be treated on equal footing to fully renewable hydrogen in regulation. Hence eliminating the strict European RFNBO label in Germany.
