Kawasaki breaks ground on major liquefied hydrogen hub

Kawasaki Heavy Industries and its partner Japan Suiso Energy (JSE) held a groundbreaking ceremony on November 27, 2025 for the new Kawasaki LH₂ Terminal in Ogishima, Kawasaki City, marking a significant step toward creating a commercial-scale liquefied hydrogen supply chain in Japan. The facility, part of a Green Innovation Fund–supported demonstration project, will feature one of the world’s largest 50,000 m³ liquefied hydrogen storage tanks and include maritime loading/unloading, hydrogen liquefaction, distribution, and trucking infrastructure, serving as a cornerstone for future international hydrogen imports and domestic supply. The project aims to begin operations by fiscal year 2030 and establish performance, safety and economic benchmarks for a global hydrogen supply chain - including a large liquefied hydrogen carrier currently planned - which supports broader ambitions for a hydrogen-based energy society.
