JRC publishes lifecycle analysis on hydrogen carriers

The EU has pledged to import half of its target of 20 million tonnes of hydrogen used per year by 2030 in order to reduce CO2 emissions — but shipping H2 via carriers such as ammonia, methanol, or synthetic natural gas (SNG) could come with far worse environmental impacts compared to domestic production.

This is according to a new report by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, which sets out lifecycle analysis for not only reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also environmental consequences such as land and water use, pollution, and toxicity to humans.
