Hydrogen powers the digital future at Dublin data centre
Equinix has successfully completed a landmark trial of a hydrogen-powered backup power system at its DB5 International Business Exchange™ data centre in Dublin, demonstrating the potential of hydrogen to support the growing energy demands of digital infrastructure. The project combined hydrogen fuel cells and battery storage to provide resilient, low-emission backup power, offering a promising alternative to conventional diesel generators. As data centres face increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining reliability, the trial highlights how hydrogen can play a key role in decarbonising critical infrastructure. The initiative marks an important step towards integrating hydrogen into the energy systems that underpin the digital economy, further expanding the technology’s applications beyond industry and mobility into the fast-growing data centre sector.
