Growing interest in the use of hydrogen generators at music festivals
Festival organisers are increasingly committed to reducing both CO₂ emissions and local air pollution and to phasing out fossil-fuelled diesel generators. This transition can be achieved through the use of (green) grid electricity, battery systems, more energy-efficient equipment and hydrogen generators. In 2024, two green hydrogen generators were already deployed at the Nerdland Festival in Wachtebeke to supply the food court with electricity throughout the weekend. This was done in collaboration with Eneria, Fluxys and Air Products. Mid-September 2026, another important and successful step was taken at the Baroeg Open Air Metal festival. The festival was powered entirely by five hydrogen generators, in combination with grid electricity and batteries, meaning that no traditional diesel generator was needed to supply power to the festival site.
Over the coming months, WaterstofNet and the Waterstof Industrie Cluster will work to help accelerate and facilitate this transition. We invite all WIC members and stakeholders from the festival sector to take part. To get involved, please contact filip.sillis@waterstofnet.eu.
On Thursday, 8 October 2026, the Event Confederation, in collaboration with CODE – Collectief Duurzame Energie – organises the webinar ‘Electrification of events: quick wins and practical cases’. You can register here.
CODE has also prepared a guidance brochure containing useful insights for event organisers. The brochure, ‘Electrification of your event – Towards an emission-free events sector’, can be downloaded here.
