Green hydrogen breakthrough at Rotterdam refinery

Sunfire and its partners have brought online the world’s largest industrial-scale solid oxide electrolyzer at Neste’s Rotterdam site, marking a pivotal step in the MultiPLHY project’s mission to replace fossil-based hydrogen in refining. Operating at around 850 °C with an efficiency of up to 84 % (LHV, AC), the system yields more than 60 kg of renewable hydrogen per hour. Integrating twelve modules into the refinery’s workflow, the deployment showcases how high-temperature electrolysis can cut electricity demand and support deep decarbonization in heavy industry.
