Global Liquid Hydrogen Alliance launched to accelerate zero-emission shipping
The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) has officially launched the Global Liquid Hydrogen Alliance, a new international platform dedicated to accelerating the deployment of liquid hydrogen (LH₂) as a scalable zero-emission fuel for global maritime transport. The initiative brings together stakeholders across the hydrogen and shipping value chain to strengthen policy coordination, infrastructure development and commercial deployment pathways for hydrogen-powered shipping. With international shipping under increasing pressure to decarbonise following the IMO’s Net Zero Framework discussions, the Alliance aims to position liquid hydrogen as a key solution for long-range, energy-intensive maritime applications where other alternative fuels face scalability and infrastructure limitations. The platform will focus on developing global hydrogen shipping corridors, harmonising standards and certification frameworks, supporting demand aggregation and accelerating investments in liquefaction, bunkering and port infrastructure. According to ZESTAs, the initiative responds to the growing need for stronger coordination across the hydrogen ecosystem, as more than 600 hydrogen projects linked to Europe are already backed by over €175 billion in committed investment.
