First section of Dutch hydrogen network officially inaugurated in Rotterdam
King Willem-Alexander and Minister for Climate and Green Growth Stientje van Veldhoven officially inaugurated the first section of the Dutch national hydrogen network in Rotterdam. The symbolic activation took place during the World Hydrogen Summit (WHS), marking a major milestone in the development of hydrogen infrastructure in the Netherlands and Europe. The newly completed 32-kilometre pipeline connects the Maasvlakte with Pernis and enables hydrogen transport from production sites in the Port of Rotterdam to industrial users. Developed by Gasunie, the project forms the first operational segment of a future 1,200-kilometre hydrogen backbone that will connect key industrial regions in the Netherlands and link with hydrogen storage facilities and cross-border networks in Belgium and Germany. By largely repurposing existing natural gas pipelines, the network accelerates the transition towards a low-carbon industrial system while strengthening Europe’s energy resilience and competitiveness. Gasunie, together with German partners Thyssengas and Open Grid Europe, also signed a new agreement to further develop a cross-border hydrogen corridor between the Netherlands and Germany, reinforcing the ambition to position Northwestern Europe as a leading hydrogen hub.
