Fincantieri and Viking announce the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship
Looking forward to summer and travel after reading the previous message? We get it. Have you considered a sustainable cruise? Thanks to Fincantieri and Viking, that option is becoming a reality.
The companies recently announced the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, the Viking Libra, which will use hydrogen stored onboard for both propulsion and electricity generation. Currently under construction at the Fincantieri Ancona shipyard, the vessel is set for delivery in late 2026.
With a gross tonnage of around 54,300 tons and a length of 239 meters, the Viking Libra will host up to 998 guests across 499 staterooms. Built with sustainability at its core, the ship will operate with zero emissions, enabling it to reach eco-sensitive areas. A onboard hydrogen storage system will use a containerized solution to tackle supply chain constraints. The vessel’s PEM fuel cell system will be specially designed for cruise operations, powering the ship's journey while keeping emissions at bay.
