European Commission launches first Europe-wide natural hydrogen mapping initiative

Getech has been awarded a €1 million European Commission contract as the lead geological partner in a consortium tasked with delivering the first Europe-wide assessment of natural hydrogen potential. Commissioned by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW), the 12-month study will map geological settings favourable for naturally occurring hydrogen across all EU Member States, assess the feasibility of commercial extraction at selected locations, and develop evidence-based recommendations for the regulatory framework needed to support sustainable production. Leveraging its proprietary geoscience datasets, gravity and magnetic data, and Globe platform, Getech will provide the geological foundation for this landmark initiative, which is expected to play a key role in advancing Europe's understanding of natural hydrogen as a future low-carbon energy resource while informing investment and policy development.
