EU Boosts Hydrogen Mobility Infrastructure

The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) announced on 17 November 2025 that over €600 million in grants have been awarded to 70 projects across 24 EU countries to support alternative-fuel infrastructure under the AFIF call, with a notable focus on hydrogen. The funding will enable the deployment of 38 new hydrogen refuelling stations catering to cars, trucks and buses along major transport corridors.

Included in the list is a flagship Hydrogen Refuelling Station, developed by Virya Energy as part of the Liège Hydrogen Valley, planned at the inland port of Liège. This publicly accessible station will deliver ~2 t/day of hydrogen at 350/700 bar and will be supported by a 15 MW electrolyser, strengthening Belgium’s cross-border hydrogen corridor. Large-scale projects in Spain (30 stations) and France further expand Europe’s hydrogen refuelling backbone.

In maritime decarbonisation, the EU also backs zero-emission ammonia bunkering, supporting a dual-fuel (hydrogen–diesel) ammonia bunkering barge - a project of the Luxemburg company Deltatank - with 8,000–10,000 m³ capacity to operate across the core ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp-Bruges, Ghent, Vlissingen and Terneuzen, equipped with a battery-fuel-cell system using hydrogen generated from boil-off ammonia.
