EU approves €200m German state aid for Canadian green hydrogen imports

The European Commission has approved a €200 million German state aid scheme to support the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives (RFNBOs) in Canada for import into Germany and the wider EU market, through a joint German-Canadian H2Global tender. The funding, which will be matched by a similar contribution from Canada, is expected to help build up to 300 MW of electrolysis capacity in Canada and avoid up to 2.47 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions by bridging the price gap between green hydrogen costs and current market prices via competitive ‘double auction’ tenders that connect Canadian producers with European buyers. Beneficiaries must meet EU RFNBO sustainability criteria, reinforcing that imported hydrogen meets strict renewable quality standards while strengthening supply chain diversity and energy security for Europe’s hydrogen economy.
