EnBW–ACWA deal strengthens hydrogen and ammonia pathway to Europe
Germany’s utility EnBW has signed a new agreement with Saudi developer ACWA Power to advance a hydrogen-to-ammonia export pathway aimed at supplying Europe with large-scale renewable energy imports. The deal focuses on developing the first phase of the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Hub, an integrated project combining renewable power generation, desalination, hydrogen electrolysis, ammonia conversion facilities, and dedicated export infrastructure, with operations expected around 2030. VNG plans to build a cracking facility in Rostock that will convert imported ammonia back into hydrogen, which will then be supplied into Germany’s hydrogen core network, according to the statement. By converting green hydrogen into ammonia for easier transport, the partnership supports Europe’s growing demand for clean energy carriers to decarbonize industry and reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports. The agreement is part of wider efforts to establish a Saudi–European hydrogen supply corridor and accelerate international trade in sustainable fuels.
