Cross-border hydrogen initiatives strengthen innovation and infrastructure

Several new initiatives have been set up to accelerate the development of the hydrogen economy in the Meuse-Rhine region and the North Sea area. Through cross-border cooperation and innovative projects, stakeholders are working to strengthen hydrogen infrastructure, build regional ecosystems and integrate renewable energy more efficiently.

One of the key initiatives is the Hy-Infra initiative, which focuses on advancing hydrogen infrastructure across borders in the Meuse-Rhine region. The project will map regional hydrogen demand, align infrastructure plans across borders, and develop a modular roadmap for stakeholders.

In parallel, the EMR H2-HUBs project brings together partners from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany to develop a cross-border hydrogen ecosystem in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine (EMR). The project aims to connect companies, research organisations and public authorities through regional hydrogen hubs that stimulate collaboration, knowledge exchange and innovation.

Another project, Hyacint (Hydrogen to Avoid Curtailment in Turbine farms), explores how hydrogen can help address the curtailment of offshore wind turbines.

Together, these initiatives illustrate the increasing efforts across the region to develop hydrogen solutions and highlight the role of cross-border cooperation in addressing remaining challenges.
