China commissions world’s largest 30 MW pure hydrogen gas turbine

China has successfully commissioned and begun stable operation of Jupiter I, the world’s first 30 megawatt (MW) pure hydrogen gas turbine power plant, marking a major milestone in large-scale hydrogen power generation and energy storage. The demonstration project (jointly developed by Mingyang Group and Shenzhen Energy) in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, runs entirely on 100 % hydrogen - produced from renewable electricity via electrolysis - and converts it back into electricity. It showcases a full ‘green electricity - green hydrogen - electricity’ energy system that helps absorb surplus wind and solar power and smooths grid fluctuations. Operating in combined-cycle mode, the turbine can generate about 48,000 kWh per hour - enough for roughly 5,500 households - and is expected to cut over 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually compared with similar-capacity thermal power. This breakthrough demonstrates hydrogen’s viability as a zero-carbon dispatchable energy source and strengthens the case for integrating hydrogen into large-scale clean power systems.
