BYD bets on buses – and hydrogen
Electric vehicle giant BYD is expanding its zero-emission toolkit with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered bus. Known for its expertise in battery-electric vehicles, the company is now entering the hydrogen fuel cell arena - targeting urban transit systems that need fast refueling and extended range. The bus will utilize BYD’s battery-electric platform, integrating hydrogen fuel cell technology to eliminate operational dependency on charging. The fuel cell bus emits only water vapor, making it a clean-energy option for high-demand public transport routes. This move positions BYD not only as a manufacturer, but as a potential accelerator for hydrogen infrastructure. For now, it seems the bus will only be deployed in the United States as part of specific pilot projects.
