BMW Secures €273 Million for Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Drive Development

BMW AG has secured €273 million in public funding under the EU’s IPCEI Hydrogen programme to develop and industrialise hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains for passenger cars, with about €191 million coming from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and €82 million from Bavaria’s Ministry for Economic Affairs. The support will finance BMW’s Hy2Move project, which focuses on next-generation fuel-cell electric drivetrains, hydrogen storage systems and hydrogen-specific components that can be integrated into flexible vehicle architectures, building on the iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet. BMW has chosen for Belgium as one of the pilot countries for this car, collaborates with local hydrogen producers and plans the hydrogen iX5 launch in Belgium from 2028.
