BMW Leipzig to pioneer hydrogen pipeline supply in automotive production

BMW’s Leipzig factory is set to become the world’s first car plant to receive hydrogen via a dedicated ~2 km pipeline, replacing deliveries by truck. The connection is expected to begin supplying hydrogen by mid-2027. The pipeline will link the site to Germany’s nascent 9,000 km hydrogen core network, and supports expanded use of hydrogen in high-energy processes like paint shop drying.  Contracts have been signed with MITNETZ GAS GmbH and ONTRAS Gastransport GmbH, responsible for linking the facility to Germany’s hydrogen core network.
