Australia publishes State of Hydrogen 2022 report
Under the National Hydrogen Strategy (the Strategy), the Australian Government committed to undertake an annual review of Australia’s clean hydrogen industry development performance and publish an annual State of Hydrogen report with the 2022 report released in April 2023. Australia's hydrogen and derivatives industry investment pipeline of AUD$230 to $300 billion represents approximately 40% of all global renewable hydrogen projects announced to date.
Although the majority of the green hydrogen projects in Australia are focused on the export opportunities, there is an increasing focus on domestic usage with significant offtake potential:
- Green steel - as the world’s largest iron ore producer, Australia can play a major role in transitioning iron and steelmaking from an industry producing around 7% of global emissions to a net-zero emissions industry.
- Chemical feedstock - replacing fossil-fuel based hydrogen and ammonia production, green ammonia for fertilisers and materials for explosives for the mining sector
- Green fuels - high density fuels as fuels for shipping and aviation are in high demand, but also fuels for heavy transport including the mining sector has a huge potential in Australia
