Alquion invests in 500 kW flexible electrolyser at Nyrstar Budel
Dutch hydrogen technology company Alquion announced its final investment decision (FID) on a 500 kW Flexolyser demonstration project at Nyrstar’s industrial site in Budel, the Netherlands. The €10 million project, supported by €3.7 million in DEI+ funding, represents an important step towards commercialising flexible green hydrogen production. Building on a successful 50 kW pilot at Eindhoven University of Technology, the Flexolyser is designed to produce hydrogen in response to fluctuating renewable electricity availability and prices, with the ability to switch on and off more than 20 times daily without compromising efficiency or performance. Expected to become operational in summer 2027, the installation will supply hydrogen to Nyrstar’s water treatment facility, reducing dependence on fossil-based hydrogen and associated CO₂ and nitrogen emissions. The demonstration will also pave the way for larger 5–7 MW electrolyser stacks and future 25–50 MW commercial modules.
