Toyota tests liquid H₂ at Le Mans

During the week of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (an iconic endurance race held at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France), the motorsport division of the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota, Toyota GAZOO Racing, revealed a newcomer: the GR LH2 Racing Concept, a race car powered by liquid hydrogen.

Toyota has been testing hydrogen combustion engines since 2021 in Japan’s Super Taikyu Series, initially using gaseous hydrogen. In 2023, the team shifted to liquid hydrogen for more advanced trials. Liquid hydrogen should offer significantly higher energy density than its gaseous counterpart, translating to longer range and greater performance potential - key advantages in motorsport and, eventually, in real-world applications.
