Major ammonia shipping deal between CMB.tech and Fortescue
A new agreement between CMB.Tech and Fortescue marks another significant step towards the decarbonisation of global shipping. Fortescue will charter up to twelve Newcastlemax bulk carriers from Bocimar, CMB.Tech’s dry bulk division, with three vessels set to be delivered with dual-fuel ammonia engines and expected to enter service by the end of 2026. The remaining ships can be converted to run on ammonia in the future. The deal represents one of the largest commitments to ammonia-powered deep-sea shipping to date and highlights increasing confidence that hydrogen-based fuels will play a crucial role in decarbonising long-distance maritime transport. By combining vessel innovation with fuel demand, the partnership marks another important step towards scaling zero-carbon shipping solutions worldwide.
