Kick-Off FLHyPorts - The Project Connects Flanders' Ports into Belgium's First Hydrogen Valley!

Yesterday (June 11th), the FLHyPorts consortium officially kicked off the project at the iconic Port House in Antwerp.

FLHyPorts is short for Flanders Hydrogen Ports Valley. It aims to establish Belgium's First Hydrogen Valley by connecting hydrogen production, distribution, and end-use applications across the Flemish port ecosystems.

WaterstofNet is very proud to have initiated and developed the FLHyPorts project - together with its Flemish and international partners - and  will also coordinate this ambitious initiative!

At the heart of the project is Hyoffwind, a 25 MW renewable hydrogen electrolysis facility currently under construction by Virya Energy, Messer Benelux and HyoffGreen. The facility will produce RFNBO-compliant renewable hydrogen for demanding mobility and industrial applications.

The project will demonstrate how hydrogen can decarbonise:
logistics, port operations, inland shipping, industrial processes and mobility. At the same time, it will provide flexibility services to both the electricity and natural gas grids.

The three major Flemish ports - Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Haven Oostende and North Sea Port - play a central role in the production, distribution and application of hydrogen.

Industrial partners Virya Energy and Messer Benelux will support hydrogen offtake across five key applications:

  • Mobility and Industry (VoltH2)
  • Shipping & port equipment (PSA Europe & PSA Antwerp, Boluda Towage, Kalmar and Hyster-Yale)
  • Energy integration and
  • Inland waterway transport (HTS Intermodaal)

FLHyPorts is supported by a broad consortium of knowledge partners, including the Universiteit Antwerpen and Cenex, infrastructure operators such as Fluxys, as well as public authorities and international partners.

By 2030, FLHyPorts aims to:

  •  Enable more than 1,800 tonnes of annual green hydrogen consumption
  •  Advance key European hydrogen technologies to TRL 8
  • Train 500 hydrogen professionals
  • Deliver a certified RFNBO tracing system
  •  Develop a practical replication toolkit to accelerate Hydrogen Valley deployment across Europe

FLHyPorts has received funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership under Grant Agreement No. 101250974, under the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. The project contributes directly to the objectives of the RepowerEU_GR Plan.
