ENGIE upgrades Maxima for hydrogen use
ENGIE is investing over €40 million to upgrade the second turbine at its Maxima power plant in Lelystad, positioning it as the first power plant in the Netherlands capable of co-firing up to 50% hydrogen for electricity production. The plant’s first turbine was already upgraded in 2023, and with this second retrofit, the entire facility is set for a more flexible, low-carbon future. The retrofit is expected to be completed in early 2027.
Commissioned in 2010 as the most efficient gas plant in the country, Maxima is now adapting to a changing energy landscape. With renewable energy growing, gas plants like Maxima are increasingly used as backup capacity, stepping in when wind and solar fall short. This makes hydrogen co-firing a strategic step: reducing emissions while maintaining security of supply.
